Project Origins

The discussions that prepared the groundwork for Cultures of Knowledge were initiated within the Faculty of History, the Bodleian Library, and the Humanities Division of the University of Oxford by Professor Pietro Corsi early in 2007, shortly after his arrival as the new Professor of the History of Science. Professor Howard Hotson coordinated broad-based collaborative work on the application process from May 2008 (a cooperative effort between our many Participants and Collaborators), and has directed the Project since its formal launch in January 2009.

Project Website

The main Cultures of Knowledge website is designed and maintained by Dr James Brown and hosted by the Faculty of History. Content managed with WordPress, it is an extensive customisation of the open source Vesper template released by Valen Designs. The text and information architecture are adapted from the proposal originally submitted to The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, drafted by Professor Howard Hotson and our Participants and Collaborators. Core functionality is enhanced by several plug-ins: Akismet by Matt Mullenweg; Audio Player by Martin Laine; Google Custom Search by Aleem Bawany; Rotating Posts by Mark Inderhees; WenderHost Subpages Widget by Michael Wender; Widget Logic by Alan Trewartha; and WP-Cumulus by Roy Tanck. The primary typefaces are Chaparral Pro and Freight Sans Pro, both served via Typekit.

The website is designed to be viewed on standards-compliant browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Google Chrome, but will also display correctly on Internet Explorer versions 7 and above. If you experience any technical difficulties when using the site please Contact Us.

The images on the website were sourced by Miranda Lewis, Dr James Brown, and Professor Howard Hotson. Every effort has been made to present images sympathetically and appropriately, to seek and obtain the necessary permissions and copyright clearances from authors and holding institutions (and/or to use images sourced from Wikimedia Commons and Flickr believed to be in the public domain), and to provide full attribution as well as collection, archive, or library information within alt tags which can be activated by mousing over each image. However, if you own a particular image and would like the credit and/or presentation to be adjusted or the image to be removed from the website, please Contact Us and the error/omission will be dealt with immediately.
